Stockport singer stages concert for neighbours in lockdown

A singer from Gatley swapped the stage for the street to perform 90 minutes of pop hits to entertain his neighbours during lockdown over the bank holiday weekend.

Matt Phillips, 51, can usually be found every weekend performing in clubs across the North West, but this weekend he decided to host a concert on his street – filmed live on Facebook – to fill the time in lockdown, performing hits from Tina Turner to The Killers. Neighbours enjoyed the concert from their gardens and driveways – while adhering to social distancing rules.

He said: “I’ve been missing my singing, so I thought I best do something that would help me and lift people’s spirits.

“I’ve never done a Facebook Live before, but I thought, why not. I’ve got friends that I’ve had for years who have never heard me sing, and now 16,000 people have viewed the video!

“I play songs from all genres and ages so I tried to mix it up – I had a few requests for Neil Diamond so I threw a couple of his hits in.”

The concert featured a guest appearance from his son Jordan, who features in the current series of the TV singing competition, The Voice.

Matt said: “My son is a singer-songwriter who has also been hosting his own concerts on his Instagram Page – we’re like the Von Trapps here. We’re always singing and a few neighbours had asked if we’d sing a few songs.”

After the success of his Facebook Live debut, Matt hasn’t ruled out an encore performance. He said “A neighbour has asked if we can host another gig for their birthday at the end of the month. Who knows – I might do a more intimate gig in the house.”
