Help give Herristone Park a makeover with community planting event

Residents, volunteers and community groups will be giving Crumpsall’s Herristone Park a makeover this month, planting a colourful wildflower meadow for everyone to enjoy – and they invite you to join!

The community planting event, organised by the Royal Voluntary Service, is part of the Together coalition’s Billion Seed Challenge, where people across the UK will be coming together to show some love for their local green spaces.

All are invited to come along at 12 pm on Saturday October 30 at Herristone Park to join in with preparing the ground, planting wildflower seeds and tidying up the area. Tools, seeds and free light refreshments will be provided.

Karen Kennedy, the local Royal Voluntary Service activity coordinator, is organising the Herristone Park Billion Seed Challenge community planting event as part of First Time for Everything, a programme designed by the charity and supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery to give people an opportunity to try something new, social and active for free in their local community.

According to new research by Royal Voluntary Service and supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, 38 per cent of people aged 55 and over have spent most of their time indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns.

44 per cent said they plan to spend as much time outdoors in the fresh air as possible as restrictions ease.

Karen said: “The past 18 months have shown us how important our local environment is. Whether it’s our window boxes and gardens or streets and local parks, our green spaces have supported our physical and mental wellbeing during challenging times.

“In the past, we might have taken our local environment for granted but, inspired by how much we relied on it during lockdown, the Billion Seed Challenge is a great way for people to come together to brighten up the local area. We hope lots of local people will want to join in.”

You can get involved at home too if you like! Companies such as Homebase are offering discounts to encourage the planting of seeds for the duration of the challenge.

Booking for the Billion Seed Challenge community planting event at Herristone Park (Herristone Road, Manchester M8 4PN) is recommended as places are limited.

To register for a place, contact Karen Kennedy, Royal Voluntary Service activity coordinator on 07795 450563.
