Lockdown Adventures: Meet in the Middle Story

Our reporter Gill James has been keeping herself busy with creative writing exercises during lockdown and wants you to join in with our new series Lockdown Adventures!

Over the next few weeks, there will be a different creative writing challenge set that can easily be done at home with just pen and paper or if you prefer straight on to your tablet or computer screen.

And we would love to see your work, so send us an email to changingtherecord@gmail.co.uk and we’ll publish them on our news site.

This week’s challenge is: Meet in the Middle Story

Gill says: “Is there a tiny idea bubbling away in your head but you don’t know how to turn it into a story? Perhaps you know the beginning and the end but not what happens in between? This activity will help you with that.”

What you need to do:

Take a large piece of paper.

Write the opening of the story at the top.

Write the end of the story at the bottom.

What happens next after the opening? Write that on the second line.

What happens just before the end? Write that on the last but one line.

And so on.

Look at few examples for Cinderella:

Step 1

  1. Cinderella is cruelly treated by her stepmother and stepsisters. (top line)
  2. Cinderella marries the prince. (bottom line)

Step 2

  1. Cinderella is cruelly treated by her stepmother and stepsisters. (top line)
  2. Invitations arrive for Cinderella and her sisters to go to the prince’s ball. (second line)
  3. The shoe fits. (second line from the bottom)
  4. Cinderella marries the prince. (bottom line)

Step 3

  1. Cinderella is cruelly treated by her stepmother and stepsisters. (top line)
  2. Invitations arrive for Cinderella and her sisters to go to the prince’s ball. (second line)
  3. The stepmother says Cinderella must clean the whole house before she will be allowed to go to the ball. (third line)
  4. Buttons tells the prince’s servant that there is one more girl in the house. He fetches Cinderella up from the basement. (third line from the bottom)
  5. The shoe fits. (second line from the bottom)
  6. Cinderella marries the prince. (bottom line)

And so on….

Now, add a few conversations and a few dramatic moments and you have a story!
