Saddleworth Round Table team up with NHS Hero Support to protect local frontline staff

Heroic frontline care staff at a local hospice and their patients will now be safer thanks to a delivery of vital PPE equipment from NHS Hero Support and the local Round Table in Saddleworth.

“When I saw the Saddleworth Round Table team hunting for PPE on social media I knew we could help,” said Martin McEwan of NHS Hero Support, “from the funds we’ve raised we were able to supply masks to them. We’re hearing increasing reports of community-based carers really struggling to get the PPE they need to do their jobs safely on behalf of us all,” Mr McEwan adds.

A few days on, and a batch of 1000 masks from NHS Hero Support has been delivered to Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham today, for use by community nursing staff, and staff at the hospice, who have had to change their normal way of working as a result of the health crisis and are now delivering their services in patient’s own homes.

Saddleworth Round Table was collating much-needed PPE equipment and raising funds locally to help frontline staff at the Royal Oldham Hospital, ambulance workers and much-neglected community health and care staff, when NHS Hero Support spotted their urgent appeal on Facebook, and got in touch to see how they could help. In spite of huge efforts nationally to ensure PPE gets to the frontline, there are still many gaps, leaving staff and patients without the proper protection they need against the coronavirus.

Dave Wood, coordinating local efforts on behalf of Saddleworth Round Table, said, “The response from the local people and business community has been magnificent. We have delivered stocks of masks, visors, gowns, gloves and other equipment to staff where there have been gaps. The masks from NHS Hero Support are much-needed, and a welcome addition.”

Rebecca Bentham from the hospice said, “Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is hugely grateful for this fantastic donation of masks. With teams providing end-of-life care out in the community as well as domiciliary care to patients, they need to keep themselves and the people they care for, safe. The teams can use over 100 masks a day so with stocks depleting rapidly, this donation couldn’t have come at a better time. A huge thank you to NHS Hero Support and Saddleworth Round Table, two organisations who, like us, hold the community close to their hearts.”
