The Boy That Wanted To Play Football

Manchester-based poet Mark Quinn (otherwise known as The Mancunian Poet) has shared this exclusive poem with Talking About My Generation, which will be featured in his next book.

All he wanted to do was play football;

hoping one day he would get that call.

Practicing day and night,

Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn’s fall;

all he wanted to do was play football.

He would play in the park

until it went dark;

hitting the ball against the wall,

hoping City or United would call.

All he wanted to do was play football.

Staying behind at school,

so he’ll grow up being no fool;

playing better over the years,

his parents cried their happy tears.

All he wanted to do was play football.

Playing football was his dream;

one day he fancied an ice-cream,

ran out from the front of the van,

it can happen – it really can.

All he wanted to do was play football.
