Welcome home Brenda: Memories of the Hulme urban clearance

Our community reporter Bernard Leach has put together a short video with words from Brenda Hickey and old images from Hulme.

Brenda Hickey left Manchester as a teenage bride to go to Germany with her soldier husband. She returned to find Hulme had been flattened by the bulldozers.

In 1984, 84,000 people lived in Hulme. This was reduced to just 26,000 people before the clearance programmes of the 50s and 60s.
